Football Draft Notes

A smorgasbord of fantasy football draft goodness. Random notes, updated PPR (0.50) rankings and draft results after the jump.

If you want to wait until the last few rounds of a draft (or spend $1 on the position in an auction) to draft a Team Defense, there are a few good matchups to exploit in Week One. Chicago gets Detroit at home, Arizona travels to St Louis and Tampa Bay gets a crack at Jake Delhomme and the Browns at home. I went with Tampa Bay in a draft last night because they travel to Carolina in Week Two and they play the Roethlisberger-less Steelers at home in Week Three. That’s a pretty soft schedule to open the season.

Arian Foster was purchased for $26 in my 14 team auction draft last night. We have a flex position so Running Backs should have been in high demand. I would have loved to buy Foster (I would have went up to $35 easy), but I spent $61 in the early going to lock up Frank Gore, $46 for Michael Turner who will be more involved in the pass game (my guess is 25 receptions) and $39 for LeSean McCoy, which I feel is a steal in a PPR league. I couldn’t enter the bidding for Foster. I have three more drafts coming up; Arian could very well be on all three of those teams. Foster Forecast: 1200 yards and 9 TD with room for upside.

I have an itchy trigger finger when it comes to auction leagues. I know that I have a limited budget and even if I have two first round picks already, I’m still trying to lock up top notch talent. I might be greedy and I get angry when people get steals and deals. It really irks me when people are not using big stacks to enforce prices. I get sooo madddd…. Oh, it’s perfectely fine Mr. Rydell. I got it under control. See? Iverson just missed the shot, the Sixers lose. Who cares?… THE ANGER SHARKS ARE SWIMMING MY HEAD. YOU GOTTA DUNK THAT SHIT! YOU GOTTA DUNK THAT SHIT!

I drafted Bernard Berrian last night and I’m already trying to trade him. Rostering Berrian just feels wrong, I can’t really explain it. It will not shock or surprise me if/when Greg Camarillo leads the team in receptions. I sent out a Berrian for Gaffney offer.

I really enjoy drafting three top notch RB and going for value picks and sleepers at the wide receiver position, especially in PPR leagues. Some people may think the Point-Per-Reception scoring format makes the WR position a must grab in the early rounds, but I think it turns late round Wide Receivers into sexy picks. The WR who don’t score a lot of TD are the players that benefit the most from PPR settings. Some of my favs: Johnny Knox, Malcom Floyd, Jabar Gaffney, Mike Williams, Devin Aromashodu, Laurent Robinson, Louis Murphy, Legedu Naanee, Jacoby Jones, DHB, Lance Moore, James Jones, Mike Thomas, Greg Camarillo.

These are the rankings that I used last night. The draft was going on during the preseason games so the Beanie Wells and Montario Hardesty injuries weren’t accounted for. I was already down on Beanie anyway so I wasn’t going to draft him. I like Montario and made a buddy of mine draft him in his work league two nights ago… sorry Derrick! Anyway, the rankings are set up for PPR (.50 points per) purposes.

… and here is the team I drafted (14 teams, PPR, Flex spot added)
